The Force firearms team responds to emergencies which require the use of armed police officers.
The team use firearms weapons including Taser, to help the Force arrest offenders that may be considered dangerous to the public or carrying any sort of weapon. Firearms officers also support the policing of the county's roads.
The team have launched a project called ‘Operation Pacify' to raise awareness of the dangers of young people, carrying imitation weapons, air weapons, knives or BB guns in public places.
The penalty for carrying a weapon is:
- Possession of an imitation weapon - 12 months in prison
- Possession of a knife - 4 years in prison
- Possession of a firearm - 5 years in prison
- Possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence - 10 years in prison
