Violent Northamptonshire rapist jailed for 20 years
November 13, 2017
A Northamptonshire man has been jailed for 20 years for a string of sexual and violence offences carried out against two women.
A jury at Northampton Crown Court last month returned unanimous guilty verdicts against 55-year-old Winston Reid, who stood trial charged with six rapes, eight counts of assaults, two indecent assaults and one of blackmail. He was sentenced on Friday, 10 November.
Reid, who had been described by prosecutors as a “Jekyll and Hyde character” had denied all the charges against him and represented himself at the hearing where his victims were made to give harrowing evidence about the rapes and violence to which they were subjected.
The court was told how Reid had coerced one of his victims into fearing for her safety and blackmailed her into sex.
Reid, a former personal trainer from Wellingborough, had been the subject of a public appeal by Northamptonshire Police on the BBC’s Crimewatch programme in June 2015.
As a result of that appeal, a woman came forward with information that eventually led to his arrest
Detective Constable Liz Dobson, of Northamptonshire Police, who led the investigation team, said: “Reid is an extremely dangerous and manipulative individual and the streets will be safer with him locked away.
“This was a complex and, in some ways, old-style investigation because of Reid’s lack of a data footprint such as mobile phones. This was a team effort by officers and staff who worked incredibly hard to secure Reid’s conviction.
”Northamptonshire Police takes all allegations of rape and violence extremely seriously and we would urge anyone who has been a victim to call us on 101 or via Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.”
