Young drivers are being encouraged to improve their safety behind the wheel through free training sessions at a Northamptonshire race track.
The CarKraft Driver Improvement Scheme offers workshops and driving challenges with professional drivers to give motorists aged 17-30 new skills and improved confidence, and raises awareness of the main factors behind collisions.
Sessions are taking place at Rockingham Motor Speedway on 21 October, helping qualified and non-drivers learn more about staying safe on the roads and build their motoring skills with tuition from expert drivers.
What to expect
Driver sessions include a workshop led by experienced police officers looking at dangerous driver attitudes and behaviours.
Participants also get to experience a driving session which safely offers the experience of a loss of wheel traction and driving over sheet ice. Instructors will then teach driving techniques to spot and avoid real-life situations which could lead to loss of control.
The course also includes an observed drive with a police advanced driver, who’ll give advice on techniques to build into everyday driving to improve their safety and confidence.
Non-drivers aged 15-plus can sign up for a workshop session with an advanced driving instructor as well as the chance to have a driving lesson on the track.
About the CarKraft scheme
Run by Northamptonshire Police Safer Roads Team and Northamptonshire Highways, CarKraft was launched in 2001 in response to the disproportionate numbers of young drivers killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads.
Aimed at drivers aged 17-30, the award-winning scheme also helps non-drivers aged 15-plus learn about road safety, the process of learning to drive, and experience a professional driving lesson.
Around 10,000 people have benefitted from the scheme since it was launched, and it has played a part in greatly reducing road casualties in Northamptonshire.
Thanks to support from partners including Renault UK and Adrian Flux Insurance Services, places on the scheme are free. Spare places will be offered to drivers of all ages approximately two days before the event.
