Force has Disability Confident Employer status renewed

Northamptonshire Police has had its Disability Confident Employer status renewed.

The government initiative is designed to help businesses and organisations to think differently about disability, and improve how they attract, recruit and retain disabled workers.

Disability Confident helps businesses and organisations to:

• Draw from the widest possible pool of talent

• Secure and retain high quality staff who are skilled, loyal and hard working

• Save time and money on the costs of recruitment and training by reducing staff turnover

• Keep valuable skills and experience

• Reduce the levels and costs of sickness absences

• Improve employee morale and commitment by demonstrating that they treat all employees fairly

David Smith, Northamptonshire Police’s Equality and Diversity Advisor, who himself has a visual impairment and is assisted by guide dog Darcy, said: “As an organisation we employ more than 2,000 police officers and staff members across the county and it is important for people applying to join us that they know we are a Disability Confident Employer.

“We want people with disabilities to feel like they can work for us and I hope this accreditation will encourage people to apply for jobs they may never have thought about doing before.

“Having a disability does not automatically mean that you can’t work for a police force and I would encourage any job hunter to look at our current vacancies section to see if there’s anything they may be interested in.”
