National road safety award for Northamptonshire partnership

Celebrations are in order for a Northamptonshire road safety partnership after it won a prestigious national safety award.

The Safer Roads Team (SRT), an alliance between Northamptonshire Police, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service and Northamptonshire Highways, won the Emergency Services category at the 2017 TyreSafe awards.

Run by tyre safety and driver awareness charity TyreSafe, the awards celebrate work done to raise awareness of the dangers posed by illegal and defective tyres.

The 2017 winners were announced at a gala dinner held last week at The Belfry, in Wishaw, West Midlands, where SRT representatives Kamila Poole, Sara Postlethwaite and Richard Eaton were presented with the Emergency Services award.

Ms Postlethwaite, SRT Engagement Team Leader, said: “We’re extremely happy to have won this award and the trophy we received is testament to the teamwork that went into our entry.

“This is the perfect opportunity to thank all of the people who’ve been involved in our work, including the fire crews, community safety colleagues, police, Highways, ATS/Euromaster and Hi-Q garage, your support has been invaluable and is reflected in this achievement.”

Stuart Jackson, TyreSafe chairman, said: “The importance of the role of our emergency services cannot be stressed enough. Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service formed a partnership which utilised the time and resources to deliver the tyre safety message successfully to a significant audience.”

October is TyreSafe’s annual campaign month and this year is focussing on the importance of tyres being inflated to the correct pressure. Using the slogan ‘Are you having a bad air day?’ it will be encouraging motorists to check their tyre pressure once a month.

Ms Postlethwaite said: “As well as helping keep you, your vehicle and other road users safe, ensuring your tyre pressures are correct also helps improve fuel efficiency and vehicle handling. We’re proud to support the TyreSafe campaign and will be working hard to educate drivers in Northamptonshire about this vital safety issue.”
